Theme

Jesus presses us with a paradox to push us deeper in our understanding of His kingship and His claim on our lives.

Text

And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet.”’
David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.

Discussion Questions

  1. If you could ask Jesus any question right now, what would it be?
  2. What does Jesus ask? Why do you think Jesus asks (and Mark records) this here, after everything that has gone on in the temple in chs. 11–12?
  3. Read Psalm 110. Who are the different speakers in this psalm? What are they saying, and to whom are they saying it?
  4. Why is it significant that the Christ (“anointed one”) is David's son? Hint: How does this relate to God's great promise? Gen. 3:15; 2 Sam. 7:12–13; cf. Ps. 132:11; Isa. 11:1–9; Jer. 23:5–6; Ezk. 33:23–24; Hos. 3:5;
  5. Why is it significant that the Christ is both God and man? Hint: How does this relate to our great need? Heb. 2:17; 4:15; cf. Ps. 49:7–9; Acts 20:28; 1 Tim. 2:5–6.
  6. How might people today (outside or inside the church) have a “thin view” of Jesus? How does Jesus' paradox in this passage challenge such a view?
  7. How can you learn from Jesus’ example in this passage when it comes to your use of the Bible? How can you learn from Jesus’ teaching in this passage when it comes to your approach to worship?
