Discussion Questions

  1. What promise does Jesus make in 9:1? Was He wrong? Why or why not?
  2. How is Jesus described in vv. 2–3? What are some other “sights,” and what do they all reveal about Jesus’ identity? cf. Ex. 34:29–35; Dan. 7:9
  3. Why do you think Moses and Elijah show up at this point? See Luke 9:31; cf. Lk. 24:27; Deut. 18:15; Mal. 4:4–6
  4. How does Peter respond to this scene? How might this reveal Peter’s (and our) frailty and folly when it comes to encountering God?
  5. Why do you think Jesus commands them to remain silent about what they saw? How long are they to do so?
  6. How does Jesus connect the Transfiguration to suffering in verses 11–13? How should the Transfiguration strengthen the Apostles (and us) in our faith as we consider Jesus’ suffering and likewise encounter our own? cf. Heb. 12:2.
  7. What command does the Father give, and to whom does He give it? How should this command affect your own faith and life? 2 Pt. 1:16–18; cf. Col. 3:1–4
