Discussion Questions

  1. What is pride? Where do you see pride pop up in the culture? In the church? In your life? Why is pride deadly? See Prov. 16:18; Jas. 4:6
  2. What does Jesus state in vv. 9:30–32, and how does this compare to His statement in 8:31? How do the disciples respond this time?
  3. What were the disciples arguing about on the road (vv. 33–34)? Why is this especially inappropriate right now?
  4. How does Jesus shift the disciples’ view of greatness in 9:35? Who does He put before them in vv. 36–37, and why?
  5. What does it mean to pray, teach, serve, or do “in Jesus name” (9:37, 41; cf. Col. 3:17; 23–24; Rom. 12:10; Num. 11:26–29)? How should this affect our attitude toward a) our family, b) our neighbors, c) our classmates/coworkers, and d) other Christians who are different from us?
  6. What is Jesus’ mission, and how should it motive you to service? See 10:43–45; Phil. 2:5–8; 2 Cor. 8:9; Jn. 13:3–5.
  7. In what sense should your church be exclusive? In what sense should it be inclusive? How can God’s gift of humility help you grow both more discerning and more compassionate?
